Disrespect At A Funeral

I have been to many funerals. I have officiated many funerals. I have attended church services and funerals in inner city churches many times. However, I have never witnessed open disrespect by a speaker for anyone in attendance, let alone the President of the United States. The open and shameless disrespect, and political pandering by Rev. Joseph Lowery and former President Jimmy Carter was disgusting. It would simply be politics as usual at some political event, but it was nauseating at the funeral of a great woman.
President Carter needs to learn some manners. And while he is at it, he might want to bone up on his history. It was Attorney General Robert Kennedy who authorized the wiretaps of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., under the presidency of John Kennedy and continued by President Lyndon Johnson (I noticed that senator Ted Kennedy seemed to forget that also when he spoke at the funeral). It would be good if former President Carter could muster the patriotism to recognize the difference between the NSA listening in on terrorists and suspected terrorists and wiretapping citizens non-violent struggle for rights granted by our constitution! We all might have benefited if his administation had known more of what terrorists (like the current president of Iran) were doing in Iran on his watch!
President Carter has a long and distinguished life history of involvement in the civil rights struggle in this country, on a political and personal level. He did not need to mention Katrina in a racial context in order to highlight the on-going need for greater equality and opportunity in this country for people of color. To do so was a direct personal attack on the current President who was seated behind him honoring the legacy of Dr. and Mrs. King.
Shame on President Carter. Shame on
Rev. Joseph Lowery. Shame on the democrats who continue to pander and take for granted the African American community.
